While it may be best to store in an indoor facility, most of RV owners don’t have the ability to do that. I park at my house, but can’t build a garage for it because of city ordinances. And the couple of facilities around here have long wait lists and are a long ways from my home.

In other words, most RV owners are parking their RVs either in their driveways or in open parking lots. So we look for solutions that works for them.

Comment on Make Your Own RV Black Tank Cleaning Bombs by Kimberly https://rvtailgatelife.com/rv-black-tank-cleaning-bombs/#comment-34780 Wed, 04 Jun 2025 19:42:14 +0000 https://rvtailgatelife.com/?p=1584#comment-34780 In reply to Connie Alderson.

Connie,

Usually, when I am getting the RV ready for winter storage, I add a little anti-freeze to the black tank too. (Usually whatever is leftover from the sink p-traps) This will help protect the seal and gaskets at the bottom from drying out and also from freezing. This is of course, after doing a really good and thorough black tank wash. I find that when I do all this, the toilet bomb isn’t needed during the offseason storage.

Different story if you are using it during winter, in which case, I still use the toilet bombs.

Kimberly

Do you leave enough water to fill the bottom of your tank along with a toilet bomb during the winter months while it’s in storage as well? I live in Southwest Texas and it gets to freezing during winter months. Thank you!

I would think that it could be a good idea to keep your RV in some kind of indoor storage facility during the winter. You wouldn’t have to worry about the humidity if the RV is in a temperature-controlled storage space.

Comment on Fact or Fiction: Registering RV in a Montana LLC to Avoid Sales Tax by Erik https://rvtailgatelife.com/montana-llc-registering-rv/#comment-15731 Mon, 17 Jul 2023 19:45:32 +0000 https://rvtailgatelife.com/?p=2850#comment-15731 I register my travel trailers in Alaska. No sales tax and it costs $90 for title, license plate and permanent registration. That’s it. No annual vehicle or property taxes of any sort. $90 and I’m done paying the State of Alaska or any local entity for the life of the trailer.

Comment on How to Poop in an RV (aka How to Use the RV Toilet) by Kimberly https://rvtailgatelife.com/how-to-poop-in-an-rv-toilet/#comment-15518 Tue, 20 Jun 2023 13:36:06 +0000 https://rvtailgatelife.com/?p=4366#comment-15518 In reply to Linda.

With the extra stuff in the black tank plus the um… bacteria processes digesting the stuff… it’s unlikely that a black tank is going to freeze unless it gets really cold for extra long. I’m most worried about the seals and gaskets though – so a little antifreeze after you first dump the tank is probably not a bad idea if you are camping in an extended freeze (plus how you crazy people do severe winter camping, I don’t know!)

Nothing freezes that way!

It’s pretty much the nature of the beast when you put heavy things on wood or plastic. I mean, our jacks even damage the asphalt pavement in some cases. So I do expect that any jack pads will eventually break over time. The good thing about the DIY versions is that it is pretty cheap and easy to replace with new ones. Just a few cuts and some sanding (if you are detail oriented, it’s not even required) and you are ready to go again.

But the have all broken over time. I was thinking about making new ones but buying a piece of horse stall matt and cutting it to the same size as the wood and using a combo of glue and screws to hold it in place on the wood. Might add a little more stability on solid ground and a little extra height too.
